There was a boy, around 10 years old, on a beach. In the distance, there was an older gentleman observing the boy's actions. What the boy was doing was running into the water, picking up a starfish, and throwing it back into the sea. He repeated this process again and again.
The man watched for a while and then approached the boy to see what he was doing. The boy would come up to the shore, where thousands upon millions of starfish had been brought by the high tide, scattered all over the sandy beach.
The boy would pick up one of these starfish, go into the water, throw it, come back, and repeat. The elderly gentleman came up to the boy and said, "Look, son, I've been watching you for the last 15 minutes, and in that time, all you've been able to throw into the water is about 10 starfish. There are millions of them on the shore. Do you really think..."
Before he could finish his sentence, the boy picked up another starfish, went into the water, flung it inside, came back to the man, and said, "It made a difference to that one, right?"
And therefore, when it makes a difference to one life out there, we have no idea of the impact it may have.
